Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the 2012 Council on Foundations Conference

Posted on

The upcoming 2012 Council on Foundations Conference on April 29 – May 1, 2012 in Los Angeles features several exciting opportunities to explore ideas and strategies for strengthening diversity, equity and inclusion in philanthropy.

I am pleased to highlight those sessions, beginning with a session designed by the D5 Coalition, and I encourage you to join the conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion.

  • We are Philanthropy: Monday, April 30, 10:00 – 11:30 am: A group of diverse donors—including some who participated in the film “I Am a Philanthropist”—will highlight, celebrate, and support philanthropy within and toward diverse communities, and offer ideas about how to increase diversity, equity and inclusion. How can we work to broaden and reshape the notion and definition of philanthropy in a way that is inclusive and substantial? How can we learn from and support the full range of philanthropic approaches, motivations, and vehicles that currently exist and that continue to emerge? These questions—and others—will be addressed during the discussion.

Other sessions related to diversity, equity and inclusion at the 2012 Conference:

  • Mini-Plenary: Looking Back, Moving Forward, A Performance by Anna Deavere Smith: Sunday, April 29, 2:30 – 6:00 pm: On the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots, actress-playwright Anna Deavere Smith will give a moving performance from Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. Presented and designed by Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy and the Association of Black Foundation Executives, this special event focuses on issues such as racial division, healing, and—ultimately—the human condition.
  • Investment Strategies that are Shaping Change in Indian Country: Monday, April 30, 7:00am-8:00am: Learn about bold initiatives that are reframing investment opportunities based on Native approaches and assets, and how increased engagement of Native communities and Native giving principles can move the needle for broader community change. Carly Hare, Executive Director of Native Americans in Philanthropy, will also lead discussions on the state of philanthropic investment in Indian Country. Hear why this work is important and how it helps build vital and vibrant communities. Participants will explore strategies that have been successful and those from which we have learned. To RSVP for this event, please contact Margie Andreason by April 26: mandreason@nwaf.org or 651-224-3895.
  • We are the Change: Monday, April 30, 10:00 – 11:30: Explore opportunities for philanthropic partnership and investment that advance equity and social justice within the sector and address the distribution of philanthropic resources to diverse communities. Accept the challenge to apply a multicultural lens to a range of crosscutting issues through collaboration and partnership. Session designed by Joint Affinity Groups and members of the D5 Coalition Leadership Team.
  • Immigrant Integration and New Destination Regions, New Allies and New Cross-Sector Collaboration: Monday, April 30, 3:00 – 4:30 pm: Integrating immigrants into the economic and social fabrics of our communities is essential for the well-being of our nation. This session will look at the changing demographics of our country and its patterns of migration. Join us as we brainstorm ways that all foundations can help to fully integrate immigrants and secure a more successful future.
  • Leading Change: Flipping the Script in a Changing World, Tuesday, May 1, 10:00 – 11:30 am:Senior-level foundation staff members who have participated in Career Pathways, one of the Council’s signature leadership preparation programs, will discuss the strategies and lessons they learned leading internal change efforts. They’ll also share case studies on topics such as technological advancement, crisis management, and educational mapping. Session co-designed by a member of the D5 Coalition Leadership Team.
