D5 has been working closely with leaders in philanthropy, like you, to amplify the conversation about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)—and more importantly, to inspire action. Collaboration is a powerful tool to help advance DEI and we see D5 as playing an important role in connecting the great work you’re doing to the work of others.
We’re excited to help leaders in disparate parts of the country—from New Orleans, to California, to Iowa—expand their networks, create synergy, and ultimately build a movement. Below are just a few highlights of what we, together, have accomplished over the past few months.

Insights on Diversity Research Announced!
D5 has commissioned three organizations to conduct Insights on Diversity research that will inform the advancement of DEI in philanthropy. Forward Change, Philanthropy Northwest, and OMG Center for Collaborative Learning will each undertake innovative projects that will contribute much-needed research to the field. Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal PublishesDEI Call to Action
The Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal just released its fall issue, which features an article by D5’s Meghan McVety. Meghan’s article, The Path to Innovation and Creativity Runs Through Diversity,offers a call to action on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Philadelphia region—but also provides valuable insights about how diversity enhances innovation and impact in our field more broadly. Ohio Grantmakers Forum‘s annual conference, “Philanthropy Forward ’12,” will be November 13-15 in Cleveland. Among the sessions offered this year is a morning workshop on diversity and inclusion which will focus on the implications of OGF’s recently released benchmarking survey of diversity and inclusion practices among Ohio funders.
ARNOVA annual conference, November 15-17, Indianapolis. Larry McGill of the Foundation Center, Suk Rhee of Northwest Health Foundation, and Daniel Byrd of The Greenlining Institute, will present their perspectives and experiences with collecting and interpreting philanthropic diversity data.

The HIP GameChangers Forum in Chicago on September 25 presented a panel discussion about the recent Foundation Center report on giving to Latino communities.
2012 Council of Michigan Foundations Annual Conference & Michigan Nonprofit Association SuperConference, October 8-9, Dearborn, MI
A reception for Diverse Trustees of foundations was held in Chicago on October 24, sponsored by the Donors Forum and the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation in partnership with D5, AAPIP (Chicago chapter), Chicago African-Americans in Philanthropy, Chicago Latinos in Philanthropy, and Native Americans in Philanthropy. More than 30 guests were in attendance at this event which is the first step towards creating a network of diverse foundation trustees.
A new GrantCraft guide, Funding for Inclusion: Women and Girls in the Equation, draws on the experience of foundations in 15 European countries on reaching out and including women and girls in programs, and mainstreaming gender in projects and operations.
Grantmakers for Effective Organizations’ new publication, Learn and Let Learn, features the Council of Michigan Foundations’ Peer Action Learning Network (PALN) as one of six in-depth case studies. The PALN was formed to strengthen participant organizations’ capacity in diverse and inclusive leadership, management, and grantmaking.
