This 2009 paper written by the Council of Michigan Foundations in collaboration with the Diversity in Philanthropy Project, synthesizes themes and highlights examples and lessons from the Knowledge Symposium on Diversity and Inclusion in Philanthropy: The Michigan Experience held on March 2‐4, 2009 in Detroit, and pre‐symposium interviews with approximately 20 Michigan foundations and 17 national content experts. This paper captures the ways in which Michigan foundations are working to increase the effectiveness of their organizations while building diversity and inclusion efforts.
